PROGRAM NOTES
This piece was originally commissioned as a duet for bassoon and harp in 2018 by the chamber group Harpoon Duet. Much of my compositional output throughout that year largely consisted of intense, energetic, dense, rhythmically active works. Feeling the need to slow down quite a bit, I sought to write a work that was much more lyrical and, in a sense, intimate as a direct contrast.
Song has no specific kind of program or narrative to it; the music exists as is, ebbing and flowing where it feels it needs to go without any major sense of urgency or warning. It is full of sorrow in most cases, although just as there are tragic events that happen in life, there is always some glimmer of hope awaiting out there in the horizon.
My sincerest thanks to Harpoon Duet for graciously permitting me to write this music for them.
